There is a fight going on right now. Somewhere a woman is being taken against her will. You hear statistics about it on the news and you shake your head and think that it can’t happen to you.

And yet it does happen.

I’m one of those people who thinks all the time. I can’t really help it. And in my mind racing, my heart goes out to those women in the statistics. Not because they are victims, but because at with no fault of their own, they’re forced to climb a mountain to get back their own lives. It’s not just the physical violation that tears my heart, it’s the invasion of your very sense of who you are.

People usually don’t know what to say when they hear that reality from another person. Especially if it’s a person you care about. I know this first hand. There is nothing that comes inot your mind that will be enough and there seems to be nothing you can do in order to return the security they’ve had stolen.  You in turn feel just a bit of the helplessness that person felt. It’s the heart stopping kind of terror I don’t wish on my worst enemy.

That being said, I vow to fight. I will not stand by and allow this to happen to others without fighting for them. I’ll support and elect officials who realize the importance of establishing our justice system with the idea that we will systematically find and incarcerate these people who steel our precious sense of security. I will not allow those around me to think that it’s something that happens to others. I will not let it be the bastard step-child that we lock up in the attic and refuse to acknowledge.

Rape is real. And it’s time that we start fighting to make it an unfortunate afterthought of history.
